Commercial dehumidifier pints: AHAM vs saturation, and when you need a pump

Restoration catalogs are full of “180-pint” machines. That number is almost never the amount of water you will pull out of a 68°F basement. Pint ratings are laboratory points. If you bid them as if they were interchangeable, you will undersize the job and then blame the brand.

This article is for IICRC water techs and facility managers buying from a national catalog. It uses manufacturer-published conditions for two Germaphobix SKUs: the upright Waykar 180-pint with pump (PDGT701BA) and the low-profile ENERGY STAR 130-pint crawlspace unit (CPG130A). No invented test-lab results.

Two test points that get marketed as one number

AHAM DH-1 style ratings for portable dehumidifiers are commonly reported at 80°F and 60% RH. Saturation (sometimes called “max” or “95/90”) marketing pints are commonly 95°F and 90% RH. A compressor that is a hero in a hot, soaked structure is a different machine in a cool crawl.

The PDGT701BA user manual prints four points on the same chassis:

The 180-pint headline is the bottom row. The AHAM-condition row is 90 pints. If a competitor lists “180-pint AHAM,” they are misusing AHAM. Germaphobix should not repeat that error.

The CPG130A crawlspace unit is sold as 130 pints/day at 95°F / 90% RH. Waykar.com did not publish an 80°F / 60% RH pint number for that model at the time this was written. Do not invent one. If a bid requires AHAM pints, ask for the spec sheet or size by the saturation number with a safety factor.

What that does to a water-loss estimate

A Category 1 loss that is still 85–90°F with wet carpet and drywall is closer to the saturation column. A three-day-old job that has been opened, air-moved, and cooled toward 65–70°F is closer to the 50–90 PPD rows. If you parked one “180-pint” cabinet on a cool floor and expected 180 pints, the manual already told you that would not happen.

Grain depression and inlet psychrometrics still matter more than a square-foot badge. Manufacturer “7,000 sq ft” and “7,500 sq ft” lines assume a humidity load those marketing departments chose. A warehouse at 55% RH is not a flooded class-2 wall cavity. Use pints-at-condition plus moisture readings (IICRC S500), not the sq-ft decal.

When you actually need a pump

Gravity drain works when the hose runs downhill to a floor drain, sump, or exterior that is below the cabinet. You need a pump when:

• The machine sits in a crawl or basement and the only discharge is a sink, window, or grade above the unit.
• The drain run is long and you cannot keep fall in the hose.
• The unit will run unattended and a full bucket would shut it off (if it even has a bucket).

Published pump figures for the two SKUs:

Hose length is not the same as lift. The CPG130A ships a 16.4 ft hose and then warns you not to lift more than 15 ft. If you need more horizontal run, you can often add hose; you cannot invent more pump head.

Electrical: the pint number hides the amp number

The 180-pint Waykar is 10.3 A at the same 95/90 condition that produces 180 pints, and 5.5 A at 65/60. Restoration circuits also carry air movers and 2.5 A scrubbers. A “small” 15 A cord that already has an AlorAir Max 870 (2.5 A) and a PuriSystems S2 (5.5 A) does not have room for a 10.3 A dehumidifier. Size the string from nameplates, not from pint stickers.

Jobsite cabinet vs crawlspace ENERGY STAR

Buy the wheeled 180 when the machine must move between losses and dump water wherever the window is. Buy the CPG130A when it will live in a crawl, needs auto-defrost in the 41–95°F band Waykar publishes, and you care about ENERGY STAR on a 24/7 meter. Do not use the crawlspace chassis as a substitute LGR, and do not leave the 90 lb upright in a 14 in crawl because the pint number was higher.

Airflow on both SKUs is messy in marketing. The 180-pint Germaphobix page lists 380 CFM and 350 CFM in different sentences; Waykar Amazon copy has used 295 CFM. The CPG130A bullets say 206 CFM while some tables say 250 CFM. Until the nameplate wins, do not treat CFM as a settled spec on those two pages.

What to put on the quote

• 1. Pint rating and the temperature/RH next to it.
• 2. Pump lift and hose length, plus gravity as backup.
• 3. Operating temperature (defrost band).
• 4. Amp draw at the condition you expect, if published.
• 5. Form factor: wheels vs low profile.

FAQs

Is 180 pints three times a 50-pint household unit?

Only at 95°F / 90% RH vs whatever condition the household unit used. At 65/60 the same Waykar 180 is 50 PPD per its manual. Compare condition to condition.

Can I run the pump hose up a two-story stair?

The 180 lists 15 ft of drain height. A two-story rise is usually more than that. Put the discharge out a first-floor window or into a drain that the pump can actually reach.

Why doesn’t the crawlspace 130 list AHAM pints?

They were not on Waykar’s CPG130A page when this was written. Omit unpublished numbers. See the crawlspace spec guide.

Do I still need air movers if pints are high?

Yes. Dehumidifiers remove vapor. Air movers evaporate liquid from materials. S500 drying is both.
