The “warrior” gene DNA test detects a genetic variant of the MAOA gene. The MAOA gene gives instructions to make the enzyme monoamine oxidase A, which is responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain).
The “warrior” gene variant is also known as the MAOA-L gene. Individuals who inherit the “warrior” gene make lower levels of the enzyme monoamine oxidase A leading to an accumulation of neurotransmitters in the brain. This accumulation may explain some of the behavioral characteristics linked to the “warrior” gene including aggressive behavior and impulsive decision making.
