This DNA test detects the “male pair-bonding” genetic variant in the AVPR1A gene linked to social behavior. The AVPR1A gene provides instructions to make the vasopressin receptor. Vasopressin is a hormone that primarily controls water retention and blood pressure by binding to this receptor. Vasopressin has additional roles in regulating social behavior and stress. In men with the “male pair-bonding” gene the signalling between vasopressin and AVPR1a is disrupted. This genetic variant does not impact social behavior in women.
